It's Your Time!!

New Oven and Grill Cleaner

The new Oven and Grill cleaner is one of my favourite products that was introduced in the Fall 2009 product line!

Why? you ask.....well here is a before picture of my oven...I NEVER clean my oven!! I hate turning on the self-cleaning option because it get sooo hot and I don't like the smell of burning food. And I could never use the typical oven cleaners because the chemicals are so strong I couldn't breathe.

So I warmed my oven up (about 100F - just warm so I could touch it) and sprayed on the Oven and grill cleaner. I left it sit about 5 minutes and then grabbed some damp paper towel (I really should have used my Enviro Cloth...I just wasn't sure if it would stain the cloth...apparently it just washes out...so next time I will use the Enviro Cloth!!)

And here is what my oven looks like now!

I literally did nothing other than wipe away the cleaner! How fantastic is that!!

I was at a meeting last night, and someone worked it out that from this one bottle of cleaner, I could clean my oven 18 times...at a cost of $38.99/bottle, that works out to $2.17 per use. You can't beat that at the grocery store!!

One year ago I signed on to become a Norwex consultant, and had no idea what would be in store for me over the next year.

I have learned a lot of new information about household cleaners, body care products and environmental practices which have changed the way our family operates. I have also met a lot of great people who have encouraged me in this journey.

TECHNICAL TIDBITS - HARD WATER SOLUTIONS

In a recent newsletter that Norwex sends out to the consultants, I found this article that I thought would be useful for my customers.

Enviro Cloth

Hard water can result in lime (calcium and magnesium) buildup over time. This may result in your Enviro Cloth feeling harder or perhaps almost seeming to repel water and does not wet easily. One solution is to soak your cloths in undiluted vinegar for a few minutes, wring out well, and then launder. If you add vinegar to the rinse cycle it may help reduce this problem in the future and will soften your other fabrics as well.

Because well water does not contain any chlorine, this may result in odour issues with any Norwex cloth(s). To remove, rinse in vinegar, then boil the cloth(s) in a pot on the stove for about 10 minutes to thoroughly remove/kill any bacteria or organisms that may be causing the odour

Other Hard Water Solutions

For deep cleaning toilet bowls use Norwex DeScaler: pour a bucket of water into the toilet to remove most of the water. Spray the built up area with DeScaler, let sit for about 2 minutes, then clean with the Sanira Brush.

For tough soap scum, hard water marks in your tub and any other difficult job, use Norwex Cleaning Paste and an Enviro Cloth or a Spirisponge - I can give you a personal testimony on these products!!

The Dynamic Duo....

Have you ever had soap scum that just won't come off? Do you rely on Comet or Ajax or something similar to help you clean?

Well, at one of my shows this weekend, the hostess and a guest wanted to put some Norwex products to the test. The hostess has to deal with a lot of rust in her bathroom, and has always used Comet to get the shower clean.

Using the Spirisponge and the Cleaning Paste, they was able to get the shower clean...they cleaned by name on the shower wall to show how well it took off the rust. I couldn't help it..I had to take a picture :)

March Give Away!

Many people have asked me if I actually use the Norwex products in my home. And the answer is definitely yes! Over the next few months, I will write about how and where I use various products in my life. Feel free to comment on your experience with the products or ask me to talk about a specific product that you're interested in. I will then be giving away some of my favourite products...so stay tuned!

So to start, I thought I would talk about basic personal care items. There are a few things everyone needs to do...wash, use deodorant and brush your teeth. Not surprisingly, Norwex has products that can help you with these tasks.

First, everyone needs to wash. I use the Antibac Body Pack face cloth to wash my face before bed. You can also use them in the shower to help exfoliate. I've reviewed this product before, so I won't go into the details on how great this product is!!!

Second, using deodorant is a must (in my opinion!) There are many brands of antiperspirants and deodorants on the market today...but many of them contain aluminum, which is dangerous to your health. It is linked to Alzheimer's, brain defects and a possible link to breast cancer. See this link for a full article. The Norwex Crystal Deodorant is just a mineral salt which counteracts the bacteria that cause body odour. It contains no aluminum and no artificial fragrances. I use the Spray version, but the 2009 catalogue has a rock version. I absolutely love it! I am dry and odour free for the day! If you are prone to a lot of sweating, the Crystal deodorant is not designed to stop sweat,

Finally, we all have to brush our teeth. A traditional toothbrush does an adequate job of cleaning your teeth..but when you're done brushing, any bacteria on the toothbrush just sits and waits until the next time you go to clean your teeth. And sometimes you can taste your previous meal when you go to brush your teeth...this is what disgusts me most!!

With the SilverCare toothbrush, I feel like I've just come from the dentist each time I brush my teeth. The toothbrush head is made of microfiber bristles designed to clean your teeth very well. The bristles are covered with silver, so that when you are done brushing your teeth, any bacteria left on the toothbrush will be destroyed before you go to brush your teeth the next time. This is especially great when you're sick...you don't end up reinfecting yourself with your toothbrush! And the other great thing about this toothbrush, is that each head will last up to 6 months (unless you scrub your teeth hard enough that the bristles fan out), and then you just need to replace the head...not the whole toothbrush. A great way to reduce our impact on the environment and save you money!

Household Chemicals To Avoid

I enjoy looking at a blog called Green Living, and came across an article about what household chemicals to avoid. If you're just starting out to make your home a healthier place to live, this is a good place to start:

1. Antibacterial soaps - they only kill 0.2% more germs than using regular soap, but the contain some harmful chemicals like trisoclan that is linked with weakened immune systems, decreased fertility,hormone disruption and birth defects. Using regular soap and practicing good handwashing skills is a safer alternative.

2. Air fresheners - contain chemicals like formaldehyde and and phenol, both of which are dangerous. Consider alternatives like using an exhaust fan or make your own fresheners (In the winter, I like to put cinnamon sticks in a little water on the stove and let it simmer for a while; in the spring, nothing beats opening the window for a little fresh air!)

3. Dishwasher detergent - contain highly concentrated amount of chlorine that could lead to accidental poisoning. An alternative is to use a brand that is phosphate and chlorine free. Norwex sells a detergent for dishwashers (but not for use in dishwashers with a stainless steel interior) I can't use the Norwex detergent, so I have been buying Method dishwasher detergent, available at Canadian Tire and other stores.

4.Oven cleaner - one of the most dangerous household chemical because of its corrosive nature. If you're fortunate to have a self-cleaning oven, use this feature and then clean up the debris with an Enviro Cloth. If you don't have a self-cleaning oven, you can make your own using baking soda, salt and water. You can use a Spirisponge to scrub the oven window clean.

5.Carpet and upholstery shampoo- many contain carcinogens. The Norwex carpet stain buster is very effective at removing stains, neutralizing and eliminating odours. For fresh stains, soak up liquid with an EnviroCloth...you may not need to use any other cleaner. I've done this for beverage spills, and haven't need to use any other products!

6. Toilet, tub and tile cleaners - these products are very toxic, especially since you tend to use them in confined spaces. The Sanira toilet bowl system is an amazing toilet brush system...from the biodegradable materials used to produce the brush, to the vegetable-based disinfectant, this cleaner is a safe alternative to mainstream products. If you have really tough stains, try using vinegar to remove.


So I encourage you to start making your home a healthier place to live. You don't have to do everything at once..pick one thing and work toward making your home toxic free!

Product In Practice: Spirisponge

The Norwex Spirisponge is a sponge covered with a scrubber. After use, rinse with water to clean to help the sponge from becoming smelly so it can be used for months. The Spirisponge will not scratch (test in an inconspicuous area first). It is safe to use on Teflon and flat top stoves. Not recommended for use on stainless steel appliances. $4.99 each.

PRODUCT IN PRACTICE

I have a love/hate relationship with rice...I love to eat it, but inevitably it boils over or gets burned to the bottom of the pan. So this time I grabbed my camera to document the Spirisponge in action!

The above picture shows the burnt on ring on my flat-top stove as a result of the pot boiling over..again. I let the burner cool, then wet the Spirisponge and scrubbed the burner.

And this is the result...a very clean burner!
